A little preparation turns a stressful install into a smooth one. Here is exactly what we handle, what we need from you, and what to expect hour by hour.
Flooring installation is one of the more disruptive home projects, simply because it touches every room you actually live in. The good news is that most of the friction is predictable, and an hour of preparation on your side removes nearly all of it.
Start with acclimation, because it happens before install day and it is the step most often skipped. Most wood, laminate and some vinyl products need to sit in the room where they will be installed for 48 to 72 hours so the material settles to your home's temperature and humidity. Skip it and you risk gapping in winter or buckling in summer. We deliver material ahead of schedule for exactly this reason, so you will need a room where boxes can sit flat and undisturbed.
Next, clear the small items. We move the furniture, but we do not move your belongings. Empty closets in the affected rooms, take down anything hanging on the walls that could be knocked by a plank being carried through, and clear the tops of dressers and bookcases. Anything fragile or irreplaceable should be moved to a room we are not working in.
Plan for pets and small children in advance. Installation days involve open doors, power tools, adhesive fumes on glue-down jobs and sharp offcuts. The simplest solution is arranging for pets to be elsewhere for the day. If that is not possible, tell us at the estimate stage and we will sequence the work so there is always a secure closed room available.
Expect noise and dust. Removing old flooring — particularly tile or glued-down vinyl — is the loudest and dirtiest part of the job, and it usually happens first. We use containment and clean as we go, but the first few hours are genuinely disruptive. If you work from home, plan to be out or set up in a room at the far end of the house that morning.
There are a few things we need from you on the day: access to a power outlet and to water, somewhere for the crew to park close enough to carry material, and a working phone number in case something under the old floor needs a decision. Occasionally we lift the old flooring and find water damage, an unlevel slab or an unexpected subfloor material. Being reachable means we can resolve it in ten minutes rather than losing half a day.
When we finish, we clean up, haul away the old flooring and packaging, and walk the whole job with you before we call it done. Most floating floors can be walked on immediately; glue-down products usually need to stay clear for 24 hours and furniture off for longer. We will tell you exactly which applies to your floor before we leave, and put it in writing on the estimate so there are no surprises.
