Both are waterproof and both are called luxury vinyl plank, but SPC and WPC behave very differently underfoot. Here is how we help Solano County homeowners choose.

Almost every customer who walks into our Vacaville showroom asking about waterproof flooring ends up in the same conversation. They have read that luxury vinyl plank is the answer, they have seen the price range, and then they discover there are two very different products hiding behind the same name: SPC and WPC. Both are waterproof. Both look similar on a display board. They are not interchangeable.

SPC stands for stone plastic composite. The core is a dense blend of limestone powder and PVC, and it is rigid and heavy. That density gives it two real advantages. First, it resists denting — drop a cast iron pan or drag a loaded refrigerator across it and you are far less likely to leave a permanent mark. Second, it is dimensionally stable across temperature swings. In a Vacaville or Antioch home with big west-facing windows, floor temperature can climb significantly through a summer afternoon, and SPC barely moves in response.

WPC stands for wood plastic composite. The core uses a wood flour and PVC blend with a foaming agent, which makes it lighter and slightly softer. The trade-off works in the other direction: WPC feels warmer underfoot, absorbs sound better, and is more forgiving on a subfloor that is not perfectly flat. In a bedroom or an upstairs living area where noise transmission matters, that difference is genuinely noticeable.

So which one should you buy? Our general rule is straightforward. Choose SPC for kitchens, entryways, laundry rooms, sunrooms and any home with large dogs, heavy furniture or serious sun exposure. Choose WPC for bedrooms, upstairs rooms and living spaces where comfort and quiet matter more than impact resistance. Plenty of homes end up with SPC downstairs and WPC upstairs, and there is nothing wrong with that.

The wear layer matters at least as much as the core, and it is the specification people most often ignore. The wear layer is the clear protective film on top, measured in mils. A 6 mil wear layer belongs in a low-traffic rental bedroom and nowhere else. For a normal family home we recommend 12 mil as a minimum, 20 mil for homes with pets or children, and 28 to 30 mil for rentals and commercial spaces. This is where cheap online flooring quietly cuts cost, and it is why two planks that look identical can differ enormously in how they age.

One thing neither product forgives is a bad subfloor. Rigid plank telegraphs every hump and dip beneath it, and the result is hollow-sounding spots and, eventually, seams that separate. Before we quote any vinyl plank job we check flatness across the whole run and take moisture readings on concrete slabs. If levelling is needed, it goes in the estimate up front rather than appearing as a surprise on install day.

If you want to settle the question in ten minutes rather than ten evenings of research, come and stand on both. We keep SPC and WPC samples side by side at the Elmira Road showroom, and the difference in weight, warmth and flex is obvious the moment you handle them. Bring your room dimensions and we will give you a free written estimate the same visit.
